Schoolcraft College is looking for an On-Call Ceramics Lab Technician

Job Title: On-Call Ceramics Lab Technician
Employee Group: On-Call
Recommended Salary: $10/hour
Department: Continuing Education and Professional Development
Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for long periods, bending over tables, lifting up to 50 lbs., and compliance with all safety requirements. Employee will also have some exposure to various ceramic compounds.
Job Summary/Basic Function: Provides general oversight for open lab hours, assists instructors where necessary, makes clay, fires cone 10 kiln.
Minimum Qualifications: 1. Previous ceramics experience.
Preferred Qualifications: 1. Knowledgeable of ceramic supplies, kiln firing, equipment and materials.
2. Demonstrated ability to multitask.
3. Demonstrated ability to work with students displaying varied skill levels.
4. Demonstrated ability to work with ceramic faculty members (credit and non-credit).
5. Effective Communication Skills.

Special Instructions to Applicants: This position is for approximately 12 hours in the lab per week, plus cone 10 firing. Lab Techs are needed approximately 40 weeks per calendar year. During summer Kids on Campus program, the lab tech is needed for 30 hours per week plus kiln firing.

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

1    Opens and closes lab.
2    Maintains lab hours log, assuring students sign-in.
3    Glaze making, as needed.
4    Clay making, as needed.
5    Kin loading and firing, as needed.
6    Answers general student questions.
7    Monitors ceramic room supplies.
8    When inventory is low, places requests on order forms and initials.
9    Assures students clean their work areas and lab is ready for next class.
10    Notifies supervisor of issues or concerns.
11    Assures Ceramic Room procedures are followed.
12    Contacts Facilities Management if spills occur during open lab hours.
13    Assures that there is an adequate supply of basic cleaning supplies (paper towel and soap) in the lab.
14    Other duties as assigned.
