Join the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts ceramics students as we unload the wood kiln following our spring four day firing. Over 800 pots will be unloaded and you'll witness how heat, flame and natural ash can transform clay.  This will take place Sunday May 18, the day after Michigan Mud 2025.

During Michigan Mud, Julie Devers will present a lecture on the topic of community and clay at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts’ Kirk Newman Art School. This community-based art center, housed within a prestigious Midwestern museum, offers a wide range of courses, strong student-instructor relationships, and a space for community, friendship, and artistic expression. The anagama kiln was built in 2000 by instructors and students at the KIA. Students who register for this class offering spend time making work appropriate for our kiln, learning about loading, glazing  and the wood firing process.  The community aspect alone of this twice a year endeavor is a valuable experience while also delivering work that reflects this unique process. Attendees do not need to be registered for Michigan Mud 2025.
